Where to Stay Near Sequoia and Kings Canyon in 2026: Three Rivers, Wuksachi, Grant Grove and Fresno

Where to stay for Sequoia and Kings Canyon in 2026: compare Three Rivers, Wuksachi, Grant Grove, Fresno, Visalia and Cedar Grove by drive times and trip style.

Where you stay can save more time in Sequoia and Kings Canyon than almost any itinerary trick. The two parks are managed together, but their attractions are spread along slow mountain roads. A hotel that looks “near the park” on a booking map can still leave you two hours from the trail you want. The best base depends on whether your priority is Giant Forest, Kings Canyon, Mineral King or simply a comfortable town with restaurants.

For a first trip of three or four nights, I often recommend splitting the stay: Three Rivers or an in-park Sequoia property for Giant Forest, then Grant Grove or Fresno for Kings Canyon. That removes a major backtracking day.

Quick comparison

Three Rivers: best all-around Sequoia gateway

Three Rivers sits on Highway 198 just outside the Ash Mountain Entrance. It is the most practical town for General Sherman, Giant Forest, Moro Rock and Mineral King. Restaurants and lodging are spread along the highway rather than concentrated in a walkable center, so check the exact property location before booking.

The drawback is Kings Canyon. Grant Grove is much farther away than the map suggests because Generals Highway is winding. If you plan a full Cedar Grove day, moving north for at least one night is usually worth the inconvenience of changing hotels.

Wuksachi and Lodgepole: best for waking up inside Sequoia

Staying within or near the Giant Forest/Lodgepole area gives you the biggest advantage at General Sherman: you can begin before day-trippers climb from Three Rivers or Fresno. It also reduces night driving on Generals Highway.

The trade-off is price and limited supply. In-park rooms and campground sites can book well ahead, restaurant hours are seasonal, and there is no fuel inside park boundaries. Bring a realistic amount of food and arrive with enough gasoline.

Grant Grove: best for Kings Canyon

Grant Grove is the strategic choice if the General Grant Tree, Cedar Grove and Kings Canyon Scenic Byway are major priorities. You can walk to or quickly reach key facilities without repeating the long drive from Three Rivers. It also keeps you near Highway 180, the preferred entrance route for many oversized vehicles.

Seasonal services are more limited than in Fresno, so verify what is open on your dates. Our Grant Grove guide explains how to use the area for a half-day before driving deeper into Kings Canyon.

Fresno: best for selection and lower-elevation services

Fresno has the largest choice of conventional hotels, restaurants, supermarkets and rental-car services among the main western gateways. It is a sensible first or last night if your trip begins at Fresno Yosemite International Airport or if you want an easy resupply day before entering via Highway 180.

The downside is commute time. You do not wake up among the sequoias, and a full Sequoia day via Giant Forest becomes long. Fresno is much better for Grant Grove than for Mineral King.

Visalia: best for travelers trying to reduce driving

Visalia is farther from the Ash Mountain Entrance than Three Rivers but offers more city services and, in the summer season, access to the paid Visalia–Sequoia Shuttle. That can be useful for travelers who do not want to drive the steepest park roads. The service still requires planning and does not solve transportation inside Kings Canyon.

Cedar Grove: best for immersion, when open

Cedar Grove is deep inside Kings Canyon and only seasonally accessible by Highway 180. Staying there, when lodging or camping is operating, gives you quiet mornings and immediate access to the canyon, but it removes flexibility for dining, shopping and other park districts. It is not a base for General Sherman.

Camping vs lodging

Camping places you closer to trailheads and can reduce cost, but reservations and opening dates vary by campground. Lodgepole sites are reservation-only and typically release on a rolling schedule. Campgrounds can close because of storm damage; in 2026, for example, Buckeye Flat is closed for the year because of past winter-storm damage.

Use the NPS campground directory and Recreation.gov for current availability. Do not assume a campground shown on an old map is operating.

Best base for Mineral King

Three Rivers is the clear choice. The Mineral King Road junction is in town, before Ash Mountain Entrance. From Grant Grove or Fresno, you would spend too much of the day just reaching the start of the slow road. Mineral King itself has limited seasonal camping and no normal fuel or electricity.

How many times should you change hotels?

For two nights, stay in one place and accept extra driving. For three to four nights, one change is often worthwhile: two nights near Sequoia, then one or two nights near Grant Grove/Fresno. For five or more nights, a dedicated Mineral King or Cedar Grove stay can make sense if those areas are the purpose of the trip.

Families and evening driving

With children, location matters even more because a winding two-hour return after dinner can be harder than the day’s hike. Choose a base that lets you finish the afternoon near your bed. If anyone is prone to carsickness, split the parks rather than commuting over Generals Highway repeatedly.

Winter lodging strategy

Winter changes which roads and areas are practical. Cedar Grove is typically inaccessible, Mineral King Road is closed, and chain requirements may affect the remaining routes. A lower-elevation gateway such as Three Rivers or Fresno gives you flexibility if a storm interrupts mountain access.

Booking checklist

  • Confirm the property’s exact drive time to the entrance you plan to use, not simply “distance to Sequoia National Park.”
  • Check cancellation terms because wildfire smoke, storms and road closures can change mountain trips.
  • Ask about late check-in if you plan sunset or stargazing.
  • If staying inside the park, verify restaurant and market operating dates.
  • Arrive with fuel; no gas stations are located inside park boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

Is Three Rivers or Fresno better?

Three Rivers is better for Giant Forest and Mineral King. Fresno is better for hotel selection and the Highway 180 approach to Grant Grove.

Can I stay in one hotel for both parks?

Yes, but you will drive more. For a short trip, Three Rivers or Grant Grove can work as a single base depending on priorities. For four days, splitting the stay is more efficient.

Is there lodging next to General Sherman?

There is no hotel directly at the tree. Wuksachi and other in-park lodging options are the closest practical bases, while Three Rivers has more gateway-town choices.

Should I stay in Cedar Grove?

Only if you want deep Kings Canyon access and the seasonal road and services are open. It is too remote for a balanced first trip covering both parks.

Before you leave the gateway town

Download the park map and save the NPS conditions page for offline reference before you climb into the Sierra. Cellular coverage is inconsistent, and a navigation app may not know about a same-day closure. Carry enough water and food to handle a delayed return, refill the fuel tank, and tell someone your general route if you are heading into a remote district.

The final check should be specific to your day: road status for drivers, trail status for hikers, shuttle schedule for transit users and air quality during fire season. National parks change hour by hour; the most useful plan is one that can absorb a closure without turning the day into a failure.
